Counselling & Emotional Support

Living with an asbestos related disease can provoke emotions and feelings that can be overwhelming and difficult to handle on your own, whether you are the patient, carer, or a concerned family member or friend. While you may physically appear well and “look good” your ARD may be causing you and your family great distress and anguish.

Over our many years of helping and working with people who have been affected by asbestos related diseases, AMAA understands that each individual’s reaction to their ARD is different and can include:

  • Fear and anxiety
  • Anger and frustration
  • Depression and sadness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Lethargy
  • Denial and/or disbelief

How AMAA offers support

support

Many of our members have greatly benefited from seeking the support and guidance of professional counselling services. There are free services available, such as those offered through your treating hospital or local Cancer Council office, or you may prefer to attend a private counselling service to help you work through your specific circumstances. For some members the need for professional support is ongoing and for others it may only be a once off visit. Either way, it is entirely your decision and you should find what works best for you.

You may also find comfort and guidance in talking to other people who are also dealing with an asbestos related disease. Through peer to peer support many of our members have found ways to manage their ARD and also formed long lasting friends with people who have insight and empathy for their situation. This can be achieved through attending AMAA meetings, lunches or talking to each other over the phone.

It is important to remember, that there is no right way of dealing with your situation and it is okay to ask for help if you need it.

If you or your loved one are experiencing difficulty or emotional distress resulting from an asbestos related condition, please contact AMAA for assistance in accessing the best support services that are available to you in your local community. Many services can be accessed confidentially and over the phone, and we will work with you to find cost effective and realistic solutions to help you manage what you are dealing with.
